10 years ago the Coco Reef Resort and Spa first opened its doors to the world. Even before its official opening, on January 1st, 1996 the resort was heralded as being one of the Caribbean’s most spectacular new Properties.

In 1992, after a detailed study and evaluation of all the Caribbean islands, Bermudian hotelier John Jefferis decided that Tobago was the place to develop his dream resort, and after four years of development and construction the resort was ready to receive its first guests. Coco Reef’s architecturally acclaimed entrance and lobby area offers arriving guests a breathtaking view of the resort’s private white sand beach, and the Caribbean Sea beyond. For those wishing to arrive in grand style in The hotels Rolls Royce Silver Shadow is available for airport transfers. Each person is greeted with a complimentary tropical cocktail, and in their luxury room or suite a welcoming message is written on their bed in colourful bougainvillea petals. Over 40% of the resort’s guests are repeat clients and for them it is a welcome back to their Caribbean “home”.

Coco Reef is still regarded as a work in progress. Every year since opening, additions and improvements have been made in order to provide guests with an unforgettable holiday. In 2000, a £5,000,000 renovation was undertaken which included the complete rebuilding of the foreshore and extending and widening of the beach. Additionally, all the rooms and suites were refurbished to provide even higher levels of luxury. In these days of ever increasing guest expectations Coco Reef Resorts understand that constant improvement of the product is essential.

Millions of pounds are spent annually on giving The Hotel’s guests more than they expected from a relatively small and privately owned property. “Coco Reef has been the recipient of numerous accolades, not just for the hotel’s facilities but for the consistently outstanding service”. In 2004 a special article in Caribbean World magazine featured John Jefferis and his achievements together with a listing of the numerous awards the property has won including: ‘Caribbean Dream Resort of the Year’; Resorts and Great Hotels ‘Connoisseur’s Choice 2000’; Tropical Places ‘Excellence in Service Awards’ 2001; World Travel Awards ‘Best Luxury Resort in the Caribbean’ from 2002 to 2005 and “Tobago’s Leading Hotel 2005”. In 2003 Coco Reef was ranked as the Eighth best hotel in the Americas and the Caribbean by the The Condé Nast Traveller Readers Choice Awards. Additionally, just this year, British Airways Holidays named Coco Reef-Tobago “Best Resort Hotel” in their global programme.

John Jefferis stated “the recognition and numerous awards that we have received is further proof that Coco Reef – Tobago is a World Class resort.” He added “although we have over US $ 50 million invested in Coco Reef – Tobago, our guests continually tell us that the one thing that sets the resort apart from other hotels is the friendly, courteous and professional staff. This award is a tribute to our wonderful staff and our highly motivated and professional management team led by General Manager, Eric Feniet. In these days of boring multi national chains, I’m proud that the staff at Coco Reef – Tobago has been recognized as being exceptional.”

And so, as Coco Reef celebrates its 10th Anniversary, messages of thanks have been sent to all the hard working Travel Professionals for their support and for the business they have sent to the property. Jefferis continued “We owe our 10 years of success to our management team, our tour operators and our wonderful staff who have the natural talent, desire and ability to, make our guests happy and want to return.” He concluded by saying “Our guests come to Coco Reef with their own dreams of a Caribbean vacation. It is our job to make those dreams come true.”
